Shout out to Marty on his birthday! 26!
It feels like just yesterday that I was his age.
We made no advance plans for this trip, but I have been creating a list of things to do and see.
We decided to explore in the lower part of the city.
But first we did workouts in the gym -- go us -- and then had acai bowls from Playa Bowls.
We're loving not being on a schedule and not feeling rushed to do anything.
When we were dressed and ready for the day, we road Citibikes down the Westside Highway (Hudson Parkway) -- which was so fun, especially since they were electric!
We stopped for a photo at Little Island (thanks, Erin, for the tip!)
but want to go back when we don't have bikes
to hang on to and we can explore or spend a few hours.
First stop, The Mysterious Bookshop, near Battery Park, where I bought a couple of mysteries and also
sent $ to each of the kids to celebrate our annual tradition of buying summer books and going to lunch on the first day of summer. They may not use the cash for books or lunch, and that's okay.
I'm just love that even when many of them had outgrown the desire for books and lunch with mom,
they came with me anyway because they knew I loved our tradition.
(And for so many years it really was a fun thing to look forward to!)
Lunch at Sweet Greens, then took a taxi across town to
Economy Candy on the Lower East Side with floor-to-ceiling sweets.
Many familiar, but many you can only get in Asia or Europe!
(Hairbo in more options than you've ever dreamed of.
Kit Kats in all the flavors we saw in Japan.)
(Really close to the Tenement Museum and Katz' Deli, so if those were on someone's trip list,
it would be a great stop along the way! Also, Morganstern's Bananas ice cream was right there too.)
Remember Vuarnet's?!
Within a few blocks, the LES turns to Soho where we stopped at
a McNally Jackson (books) sister store, Goods for the Study,
where one shop had more pens, pencils and colored pencils than you've ever seen in your life.
And the connected shop next door had super cute notebooks and office goods.
Our last stop was The Evolution Store where Dan bought his meteorite a few years ago.
We perused and were captivated at the huge trilobites, but now I know where to get my own!
We jumped on the subway and headed home for a nap.
Dan found that John Mellencamp was playing at The Beacon in our neighborhood.
I thought I only knew a couple of songs, but after listening all morning, I discovered I was very, very wrong. So we bought tickets.
We also had another fancy New York dinner of bagels and schmear from Broad Nosh across the street.
Loved singing along to Jack & Diane and Hurts So Good and Little Pink Houses
with my small town guy. (He really identified with the theme!)
