Chris' Senior Prom

I am feeling so sentimental about this being Chris' last dance!
I'm not sure why they had Senior Prom in March, but it's their last dance.
He loved dressing up and was fearless flaunting a unique style!

Also in news, Chris' mission papers are done and he was planning on meeting with the stake president tomorrow. But we just found out he's out of town and won't be back until April 9.
Chris is so bummed! But he's having a really great attitude.
He said he's choosing not to get upset about it because "there's nothing I can do to change it."
I told him the Zig Ziglar story of "The plane still leaves at 6:05."

He kind of looks like Duckie from Pretty in Pink!

And then his friend, McKay, showed up and he was def Pretty in Pink!

Chris and Emi

Some past looks... (It looks like he really brings it at Christmastime!)

Recovering

Productivity!
Tuesday I stayed in my pajamas all day. Jet lag made us each wake up at 3:00 a.m. Except for Nick and Marty, who were still playing video games at 3:00 a.m. Good thing I woke up so I could send Nick to bed. Marty went to bed soon after.

Chris went skiing, Marty and Nick slept all day, Dan went to work, and I binge-watched Grace and Frankie. I tried to fall back asleep but never could.

Wednesday everyone had to go back to school and work and life. I woke up bright and early at 4:00 a.m. It's amazing how productive you can be when you're wide awake so early. I had a big long list of to-do's... laundry, errands, groceries, mail, exercise, dinner planning etc. etc. to get back into real life. It was a GREAT day and I was so productive!

Thursday I was so tired again! But we are powering through and getting back to normal.

Domo Arigatou Gozaimasu (Mr. Roboto)

Our last day in Japan.

We visited Shinjuku Gyoen park, which had a few cherry trees in bloom.
It would be awesome to back some day and hit blooming season!

The Ravens/Crows had the most distinctive "Caw." They enunciated it! Seriously!

We found a tiny off-the-street ramen spot.
We've had ramen so much on this trip and I have become very adept at using
my spoon and chopsticks.
Plus the noodles are tiny and clump with the chopstick so easily.
I chopstick them into my spoon where they can cool in between bites.
I've got a system finally!

We made it back to the hotel just after 3:00. We'd kept one room for half-day. Nick and Chris lay on the floor with robes as blankets and towels for pillows. Dan, Marty and I lay in the bed.
We were all officially exhausted. So much so that Marty didn't even mind climbing in the covers between Dan and I. We slept until 5:00, when it was time to head to the airport.
A 10:30 hour flight to LA. Customs and three hour layover. Two hour flight home to Utah.
We'll be home by 7:00 p.m. Monday, Utah time. Exactly the same day and same time we leave Japan! Crazy!

Yamaguchi and Goodbyes

Another amazing day meeting the people in the Yamaguchi branch.
Marty is beloved.
I cried through the whole first hymn filled with joy for the experience my son had on his mission.
Obviously there must have been difficult times too.
But he made such a positive impression and these wonderful people were so loving in return!
It was amazing!
And I cried thinking of Chris' upcoming mission and for him to have
the same opportunity to love and be loved.

We walked past Marty's apartment on the way to church.
I was hoping he'd reminisce the whole time... "Here's where we ___!"
But that's not his style.
I asked, "Is this all familiar to you?"
"Yes, of course."
"Are you thinking of all the different things that happened or day-to-day stuff?"
"Not really."

But he was excited to show us his apartment. And he was happy there was a
FamilyMart across the street. (Second best thing to 7-11.)

Surprise! One of Marty's companions from Nakatsu was now working in Yamaguchi!
They were so excited to see each other!
I get the sense Marty loved all his companions and they loved him back.

Ariel Sorensen is to the right of Marty. Tony is on the left on the end.
Everyone else was super friendly.

Marty didn't know the other Elder very well, but he was also very friendly.
He was translating for this woman who just moved here from Tonga.

Coincidentally, Marty's mission president was visiting the Yamaguchi ward that day and speaking.
So great to get to see them again!
After church, everyone wanted a photo.
This is the entire branch, minus the bishop who took the photo.
I tried to trade him places and offered to take the photo, as did Courtney, but he refused and everyone absolutely insisted we be in the photo!
(I finally got them to trade me just once.)
It was a happy, happy place to be on Sunday.

We had a 45 minute taxi ride to the Yamaguchi airport in Ube.
We've had to take two taxis wherever we go which is kind of a bummer to be split up,
but it makes it exciting to try and tell the driver where we're going.
(Just a few times have we needed to show them the name of the place on the phone.
If they're not sure, they just enter it into their own phones and we get there, no problem.)

Courtney taking a break from her homework.

She has the longest math problems! This was to calculate the heat transfer
in a cylinder-shaped container.

Last lunch at the airport -- at Coco's Cafe (a small-town American chain).
It's crazy the places they still have here... Bob's Big Boy and Shakey's Pizza, just to name two.
But lots of good Japanese food to choose from -- Tonkatsu, Karuge, Ramen

And of course soft-serve.

We flew from Yamaguchi to Tokyo and there said goodbye to Courtney.
She was flying back home that night. I hate saying goodbye when we've been altogether!

Back in Tokyo we stayed in our super nice hotel from the first night.
That night we had plans to go to the virtual reality game space that we'd decided not to do our first night in Tokyo because we were so tired!

Marty, Nick and I got a VERY speedy driver on the way to the mall.
I felt like I was in Fast and Furious, Tokyo Drift!
Even the boys were surprised at how fast we were going.

A blurry shot of Rainbow Bridge:

Giant robot outside the mall.

Super cool architecture on this building.
You can't see it, but there's a giant round ball suspended in the middle.

Before VR, we went shopping at Uniqlo and Zara. Our last chance at "good malls."
We ended up only having an hour at VR, but it was still fun to get a taste.
Several of the rides were the cars that jiggle while you watch a movie.
I tried one, but ever since Universal Orlando, those rides make me sooo sick.
And sure enough, I didn't like it. I had to close my eyes and think "don't be sick" thoughts.

Nick and I did kill a lot of zombies in another game though.

Having fun taking selfies while we wait for the boys.

We are all ready to head home tomorrow. Japan has been amazing. But home is calling!
We are in the mood for Mexican food and American sushi.

Hiroshima and Yamaguchi

Marty had visited Miyajima Island on a p-day just before coming home.
We were excited to visit this World Heritage Site and got an early morning start.

We haven't appreciated enough origami on this trip!
Courtney, Nicholas and Marty tried potato and bacon on a stick at the ferry station.
Unfortunately it was also potato, bacon and fish on a stick, a flavor they weren't expecting.
Marty is part Japanese now, though, and he liked it fine.

Deer are everywhere on the island and very tame.

A cute American family was willing to take our photo. They had a clean-cut son with them and I was sure they were visiting his mission too. I dropped a few hints, but they didn't bite.
We got to talking and no, they were just traveling over Spring Break.

Lots of shops along the Arcade were making maple leaf cookies.
Marty said to avoid the ones filled with bean paste. But the other fillings were good!

After Miyajima, we visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
We don't have photos, but it was interesting to learn more details about the events leading up to the bombing and the horrific year after. I thought it was a pretty unbiased account.

Below is the Atomic Bomb Dome -- the only building in the area left standing after the bomb.

Then back to our hotel to catch the Shinkansen to Yamaguchi to meet the Sorensens for dinner.
Marty baptized their son, Tony. It was so fun to meet them! Ariel served is from Idaho but served his mission in Fukuoka and is currently a professor there. He recently married Jennifer, Tony's mom, who is from Korea, but is an English translator. So we were able to have a nice conversation.
We had Shabu Shabu for dinner.

At Yokiniku and Shabu Shabu which were both all-you-can-eat, you ordered your food on an iPad.
At many other restaurants, you ordered on a machine similar to an ATM when you entered the restaurant and the server brought you your food.

Ice cream with cornflakes at the bottom is so good!

View from our Yamaguchi hotel.
It reminded us of Pagosa with camper doors on the bathroom! Vintage but clean.

Cute man hole cover design!
(Also note the ever present yellow lines for the seeing impaired.)

On our walk home after dinner, Marty wanted to stop in a bookstore and look for a particular anime series. Surrounded by Japanese, Courtney saw this and picked it up,
"Finally, a book in a language I understand!"

MATH.
