The boys have hand washed their smelly t’s from yesterday and they’re ready for Day 2!
Here we go!
(about an hour and a half drive)
letting someone else navigate the drive and especially the event traffic. So happy with this choice.
We made in time for the boys to watch F2 while Dan and I waited in an hour long line for the Paul Ricard souvenir shop. Also happy with this choice—cute bucket hats for the boys and race t’s for Dan and me.
Made it to our seats in time for the Porsche Cup, a 35 minute race which included both pro and pro-am.
The Pro-Am is similar to the series Dan races in.
So if he keeps practicing, maybe we’ll see him on the podium some day.
It’s hot hot hot, but with an on and off breeze and is apparently not as hot as yesterday.
Soooo glad Dan got tickets in the shade!
We cheered for the drivers in a parade as they rounded the track in vintage cars representing their teams
Lots of food tents and a million options, but long lines everywhere in the hot sun to go with it. We considered bringing our own sandwiches, but it didn’t work out; however, we did bring lots of water because the boys didn’t have enough yesterday and didn’t want to miss races to wait in line.
(Backpacks are checked on entry, but fine to bring as is outside food.)
We crossed to the other side of the track for food where the boys had found shorter lines yesterday. The lines weren’t shorter today, but the empanada line moved fast and Dan got to use his Spanish, much to his delight.
(And the food delicious!)
It was fun to see the “chicane” side of the track since ours is the straightaway. But so glad we’re sitting in shade. This side of the track is full sun.
The race began at 3:00, and ended with the first driver to finish 53 laps (approximately an hour and a half).
The cars came out of their paddocks and had time for a couple warm-up laps before the national anthem with a full marching band.
And afterward the anthem singer, still accompanied by the band gave a rousing rendition of
Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk.
Still not quite sure what the correlation is.
And they’re off!
Verstappen, LeClerc, Hamilton,
Russell, Perez, Gasley…
Someone spun out, someone hit someone else, someone made his way from 19th to fifth or fourth, someone missed the jump from yellow safety to green and got passed, someone won and two others took second and third.
As we walked away I wasn’t even sure who won.
Once the cars start pitting it’s hard to be sure who’s in front and how five second penalties affect and who got passed in the last second and why are the names on the video leader board so small?
But it was fun to be there!
