Carol, Jen and I had lunch together today. Friends since jr. high and high school.
When we're together we laugh, talk about deep stuff, catch up on little stuff and always get a little teary during at least one of the many many things we cover. I come away uplifted, inspired and grateful.
Being such long-time friends means we know almost everything about each other, our siblings and our parents. We love each others siblings and parents and are just as interested in those updates as our own. They know I always choose water over soda and I know Carol has always picked Dr. Pepper and Jen, who used to drink Pepsi, now drinks Diet Coke. We've lived together, helped each other, been annoyed at each other, and laughed together. We knew our high school crushes and boyfriends and watched each other fall in true love.
We knew Steve Harper back when he was just a regular Freshman jock from a small town in Idaho.
We visited each other during the living away years and picked up when the three of us were all back in Utah again. When we talk, no history or backstory has to be given because they know it all. A lot like a sister.
Our outlooks on life have matured over the years through experience, through mothering. We've all been through hard things. We've had worries that turned out fine and other concerns we've learned to adapt to. Kid antics that were previously upsetting, now make us laugh.
All of us have grown children setting off in the world, some who are married, some having their own children, and we're realizing that more people to love also means more people to worry about. But we're used to this and have learned to manage our expectations better and accept what life throws at us because with the love and support of good friends, we can get through anything and learn to appreciate everything.
